Locomotives

This is the 45mm gauge SL1K that started it all.

It was is a sorry state with no connecting rods and wheels that did not fit the track very well.  A complete stripe down and a few tweaks here and there and Pandora was born.

And here is Pandora

Pandora has had a new boiler, up-rated safety valve, water filler valve, new wheels, new sight glass, chimney cowl, brass dome, up-rated forward and reverse valve, new pipes, a displacement lubricator, up-rated piston inserts, new gaskets all round, new connector rods, brass hand rails, brass tank filler caps, three wick meths burner, chassis separator for meths burner, and new chassis frames.

Next stages will be to get a new higher pressure boiler with external water level glass, pressure gauge, regulator and through flow displacement lubricator. Now on order.

Then convert to gas burner with horizontal gas tank in tender. then convert to remote control.

After I have done all this she will probably have cost me as much as a half decent Roundhouse loco. But some things have to be done just to show what can be done.

Latest News on Pandora

Pandora has now received her IP High Pressure Boiler, Regulator, Pressure Gauge, Displacement Lubricator, and Gas Tank and Burner.

This blow down valve serves two purposes. Firstly, it lets the air out of the water glass so you get a more accurate reading. Secondly, it can be set to drip warm water on the gas tank and keep it warm and thus pressure up when it is cold.

She did several laps of the Dartbridge layout with this new setup and I am now happy with her performance.

SL1

My latest addition to my collection. It came with a Log Wagon and an Open Wagon and a full oval of track. All in all this was a RS1 set without the box.

The loco boiler leaks apparently, but I have not yet tested it. Not a problem as I will swap the new boiler from Pandora when her new upgraded boiler arrives from IP Engineering.

Other than that she needs a good clean, a couple of new buffers and the usual extras such as meths burner and safety valve.

New generation Mamod Loco,

'The Queens Golden Jubilee' Cert No. 004 of 500. This one had not been run and came with box and certificate.  I have since added a high pressure safety valve and fired it.

SL1.
A nice example, clean and tidy.

SL2.
A good example of this short lived loco. Oddly there appears to be some brass paint around the top of the smoke stake ring.

SL3.
A real shocker, cab bent, paint missing and rusting in places, and the oddest chimney ever, but never-the-less its still an SL3!

SK1K.
The side tanks had what appears to be poster paint covering the logo, which came off with meths to reveal the original logo in tact. A rather short high pressure safety valve had been added to this one, along with piston covers, and a meths converter block for the solid fuel burner tray.

SL6 'Mamod Golden Jubilee Locomotive'. Was missing chimney, but now has one.

Other Mamods

Mamod SE3

This is my favourite Mamod stationary engine. It is the original model with lever valve for the steam outlet and a lever whistle. It runs very well but needs a good clean.  The burner is thought to be from a Mersey engine.

Mamod SE2

Mamod SP2. Piston back to front?

Mamod MEC1

I had one of these little steam engines when I was a kid in the 1970s. It is going to be my pet restoration project to keep.

Mamod TE1A

This is another untested model for restoration. Already have many of the parts to do this. See below.

Some restoration projects are more challenging than others.

Other Live Steam

Wilesco D305 Fire Engine

I have tested this and it works fine, including the water pump squirting water.

Large hand built Steam Plant

Got this from the Dorset Steam Fair. It goes like stink and lasts for ages. It has a gas fired boiler and gas tank running a large oscillating cylinder. It could do with an inline lubricator and a water filling hand pump to finish it of nicely.

This is a nice hand built pump engine.

It runs really well under compressed air, just can wait to run it on steam.

Steam Turbine

I have recently purchased two of these small but powerful 60,000 rpm steam turbine engines.

They are about 4cm square and I intend to use them as power generators in a 45mm gauge steam turbine electric loco. Will need a lot of steam though...hence the boiler below.

Triple Marine Boiler

This will be used to generate enough steam to power my two steam turbine engines driving a dynamo in an electric loco I intend to build.
